HENCHOZ HOPING FOR SWITZERLAND RECALL
By Ian Parkes, PA Sport
Wigan defender Stephane Henchoz has issued an open invitation to Switzerland
coach Kobi Kuhn to stop by the JJB Stadium this winter as he looks for World Cup
players.
Henchoz has not played for the Swiss for the last seven months, but last night
watched with pride as the country reached next summer's World Cup finals in
Germany with an away-goals play-off victory over Turkey.
The 32-year-old's omission from Kuhn's plans appreciably came as no surprise
following an unhappy end to his Liverpool career last season when he was
immediately overlooked upon the arrival of Rafael Benitez, and then a short
spell at Celtic that did not work out.
Kuhn could easily have perceived Henchoz's decision to join Wigan at the start
of this season as one that would hardly revive the centre back's international
ambitions, bearing in mind the unfashionable nature of a club new to the
Barclays Premiership.
But to everybody's surprise Wigan have taken English football's top-flight by
storm as manager Paul Jewell's side currently occupy second in the table on the
back of a six-game winning run to leave them just six points behind leaders
Chelsea.
The foundations have been provided by a defensive pairing of Henchoz and
captain Arjan de Zeeuw, who between them are a combined 67 years of age, but who
have undoubtedly taken down a peg or two some of the best strikers in the
business.
Wigan currently boast the best defensive record in the Premiership, conceding
just five goals in 11 matches, and with five clean sheets in those last six
league wins.
Kuhn would do well to take up Henchoz's offer as the former Blackburn and Reds
defender is arguably playing some of the best football of his career, and is
certainly eager to add to his 68 caps.
``It's a great achievement for Switzerland to reach the World Cup,'' said
Henchoz.
``I know everybody is now looking forward to going to Germany next summer,
especially as it's the country next door to us.
``As to whether I go, we will see, particularly as my situation now is not so
bad.
``There are no international games for the next few months, until February or
March, so maybe by then there will be a possibility to get back into the squad.
``If I continue to play the way I have been playing and the club are still
performing well, then I think there is a chance to again be in the squad.
``Although I've not spoken to the coach for the last five months, with the
winter coming up and with no game for a while, maybe he will see a few games and different players, and hopefully he will come here.
``I know the last time I talked to him he said the door was open. Knowing if
you perform then you have a chance, that is important and gives me a lot of
hope.''
Understandably, the priority for Henchoz is Wigan and ensuring their meteoric
rise does not falter when they entertain Arsenal on Saturday.
``To be honest, the national team is not really my concern at the moment,''
added Henchoz.
``At the moment my concern is to play for Wigan and to get the points that
ensure we stay up as quickly as we can.''
