Swiss miss leaves Middlesbrough facing uphill struggle
From George Caulkin in Basle
FC Basle 2 Middlesbrough 0
IN A reversal of the norm, Middlesbrough left Switzerland with a mountain to climb. Having scaled the peaks in knockout competition, their 50th match of an epic season was a crushing experience, with Steve McClarenu2019s team showing little of their usual forte for composed defending. After conceding two sloppy first-half goals, their European campaign wobbles on a precipice.
Weakened by the loss of several senior players, Middlesbrough staggered towards their milestone. Hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup for the first time were diminished last night and an immense comeback will be required in next weeku2019s second leg if they are not to be extinguished. On this tired form, the task will be beyond them.
McClarenu2019s mood would have lifted significantly had a late header from Ugo Ehiogu not been clutched gratefully by Pascal Zuberbühler, the FC Basle goalkeeper, but a difficult position might feasibly have been worse. Chris Riggott was also required to hoof a shot from Scott Chipperfield off the line u2014 u201Cmaybe that will be the defining momentu201D, McClaren said. In truth, this was not an evening when Middlesbrough could claim injustice.
A great adventure turned sour. After their excellent behaviour in the face of provocation in Rome, the sight of Middlesbrough supporters engaged in fierce fighting with stewards and riot police was another cause for depression. On the pitch, Emanuel Pogatetz suffered a broken nose and a suspected fractured skull in an aerial clash with Mladen Petric and was sped to hospital.
Recording their half-century of fixtures, there were telltale signs of fatigue. Lacking Gareth Southgate, the injured captain, and George Boateng and Lee Cattermole, their suspended midfield players, resources were stretched to the maximum. All being well, the trio should be available to play at the Riverside Stadium on Thursday, but severe damage u2014 perhaps critical u2014 has already been done.
The stand-ins struggled to muster the grit and alacrity that the occasion warranted. There were rare starting appearances for Doriva and Ray Parlour, while Mark Vidukau2019s reward for a run of four goals in as many league games was to displace Yakubu Ayegbeni, Middlesbroughu2019s leading scorer, but the former appeared leaden and rusty while the Australia forward was anonymous.
Yet McClaren was not short of optimism. u201CWe didnu2019t want that result, but itu2019s 2-0 at half-time, thatu2019s how we have to approach it,u201D the manager said. u201CWeu2019re disappointed and itu2019s not an ideal situation, but weu2019ll have home advantage next week and we know we can play better and score goals. It will be a completely different game on Teesside and Iu2019m confident that we can turn it around.
u201CFor 40 minutes we looked very comfortable, but the goals epitomised European football. You lose concentration and youu2019re 2-0 down.u201D
His judgment was accurate. Basle, whom Christian Gross has coached to three national titles and to the verge of a fourth, were neat opponents blessed with nimble footwork and intelligence. Warnings had been delivered and by the interval, McClarenu2019s side were staring into the abyss. The goals were untimely.
In the 43rd minute, Matias Delgado took possession from Gaizka Mendieta on the left touchline, cut inside and shot powerfully from 25 yards. Mark Schwarzer may have been unsighted when Chris Riggott ducked, but the ball still took a vicious kick, bouncing above the Australianu2019s dive.
More trauma was to follow. As Middlesbrough heaved themselves forward, they left themselves exposed and a chipped through-pass from Eduardo caught them heavy-legged. David Degen harried into the area, swerving around Franck Queudrue, and shot adroitly with his right foot. u201CThe first was a lucky goal, but we certainly shouldnu2019t have conceded the second,u201D McClaren said.
Boatengu2019s juddering tackles and Cattermoleu2019s ferociousness were missed deeply and while Middlesbrough were to improve, it was a belated development. Hasselbaink clambered to connect with a deep cross from Queudrue, Zuberbühler diving smartly to prod a downward header away for a corner, and Riggott, newly returned from a calf injury, touched the ball against the crossbar, but impetus had been delayed beyond the point of rescue.
Basle were now content to sit deep, invite pressure and wait for Middlesbrough to overreach themselves. A wider advantage was only denied them by the woodwork, when Delgadou2019s angled free kick beat Schwarzer for pace. There was more upheaval for McClaren to contend with when Pogatetz was carried from the pitch on a stretcher. Ehiogu, his replacement, briefly troubled Zuberbühler.
Middlesbrough, like Pogatetz, were flat on their backs, although Gross, whose reputation has had lustre restored after his bitter, brief experience at Tottenham Hotspur, refused to crow. u201CItu2019s not over,u201D he said. u201CWeu2019ve made the first step and itu2019s a very important step, but we still have work to do. English teams never give in.u201D They have a steep incline to negotiate.

EMANUEL POGATETZ broke his nose and suffered a suspected fractured skull on a painful UEFA Cup night for Middlesbrough.
The Boro centre-back was carried off on a stretcher 22 minutes from time after a clash with Mladen Petric.
Boro's noses had already been badly bloodied by then - as a double-strike just before half-time left their European hopes dangling by a thread.
Middlesbrough keeper Mark Schwarzer was at fault for both the goals - from Argentinian midfielder Matias Delgado and David Degan.
To cap a dismal night for the Teessiders, they could face a UEFA probe after riot police had to tackle crowd trouble at half-time.
Even so, manager Steve McClaren refused to throw in the towel.
He said: “I saw enough in that game tonight, saw enough in the first 45 minutes - when we controlled and dominated - to know it will be completely different at the Riverside.
“This is Europe - this is why we are in Europe. We want these kind of games.
“Somewhere along the line, you have to come back from adversity; you have to be tested along the way.
“You don’t win this competition without surviving a few scares. We have got one now - and we have to survive it.”
A defiant McClaren added: “It’s 2-0 at half-time.
“We didn’t want that result; it’s a poor result for us. We didn’t score and we conceded two goals.
“It would have been worse if we had conceded another one in the second half.
“But we know we can score; we know we can play better than that and we go to the Riverside knowing we have got a mountain to climb - but we are capable of doing that.
“In the first 40 minutes we looked very, very comfortable. There was nothing to fear; we were defending well - and with just a bit more urgency, I felt we had opportunities to score.
“But the two goals just before half-time just epitomise European football and what it’s all about. You lose concentration for a split-second and you are 2-0 down.
“That’s what disappoints me the most, because that’s one of our main points before a game - that the end of each half is very, very important.
“The first was rather a lucky goal, but we shouldn’t have conceded the second."
Boro had conceded only four goals in their previous 10 European games this season.
But the Swiss Super League leaders were a class apart from anything they have faced before and Steve McClaren's men will have to turn in a stunning display on their own pitch to make the semi-finals.
Boro went into the game looking to do what they had against Stuttgart and Roma - keep a clean sheet and look to snatch a valuable away goal on the break.
Franck Queudrue had his hands full with midfielder Degen early on but Boro had few alarms for the first 43 minutes, Schwarzer making one save to deny defender Boris Smiljanic.
Then it all went horribly wrong.
There seemed to be little danger when Delgado picked up the ball from Bruno Berner on the left touchline.
He cut inside Ray Parlour and unleashed a dipping right-foot shot from 30 yards which totally deceived Schwarzer and reared up off the rain-sodden turf over the helpless goalkeeper's arm.
Schwarzer was still dusting himself down when Basel struck again.
Striker Eduardo played the ball in behind for Degan and he slid the ball in at the near-post with Schwarzer again going down way too early.
Boro walked off stunned at the break. They had one real chance in the first-half when goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuhler almost made a hash of a long-range drive from Gaizka Mendieta.
Zuberbuhler did better four minutes after the restart, diving low to his left to turn away a header from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
From the resulting Mendieta corner central defender Chris Riggott powered in a header which beat the keeper but clipped the crossbar and flew to safety.
Delgado was a constant menace and Stuart Parnaby made a brave block to keep out the Argentinian’s goal-bound 63rd-minute effort. Delgado then curled in a free-kick which crashed against the bar.
The visitors were forced into a reshuffle on 68 minutes when Pogatetz left the field with blood pouring from a head wound. Ugo Ehiogu came on in his place.
It might have got worse three minutes later when the alert Riggott hacked away Scott Chipperfield's goalbound effort.
Ehiogu almost netted a vital away goal in the last minute but saw his header from a Stewart Downing corner saved on the line.
DREAM TEAM SUN STAR MAN: MATIAS DELGADO (Basel). Showed just why he is the UEFA Cup’s leading scorer this season.
MIDDLESBROUGH: Schwarzer 6, Parnaby 6, Pogatetz 6 (Ehiogu 5), Riggott 6, Queudrue 7, Mendieta 5 (Rochemback 5), Parlour 5, Doriva 6, Downing 6, Hasselbaink 5 (Yakubu 5), Viduka 6. Subs not used: Jones, Davies, Morrison, Taylor. Booked: Downing, Riggott.

Boro ambitions hanging by a thread
By Rob Stewart in Basle for the Telegraph
(Filed: 31/03/2006)
Basle (2) 2 Middlesbrough (0) 0
In a country famous for its breathtaking peaks, Middlesbrough were left with their own mountain to climb to reach the Uefa Cup semi-finals.
Joint success: goalscorers David Degen and Matias Delgado
Steve McClaren's team, who had made it into the competition's last eight for the first time, shipped two goals in two minutes just before half-time that left their European ambitions hanging by a thread.
It was a particularly painful night for defender Emanuel Pogatetz, who was carried off and taken to hospital with what McClaren said was a "suspected broken skull" and a broken nose after a clash of heads with Mladen Petric as Boro clung on at a vibrant St Jakob Park - where even the visiting supporters applauded the victors.
"It's 2-0 at half-time and, yes, it is a poor result for us, but it could have been worse," McClaren said. "For the first 40 minutes we looked very comfortable with nothing to fear. We defended well but the two goals just epitomise European football - you lose concentration for a split-second and you're punished. That's what disappoints me most because I had told the players the end of each half is very important."
McClaren's assessment was accurate but his side were generally second-best to Switzerland's leading team even before the two goals came. Basle midfielders David Degen, Lladen Petric and Matias Delgado called the shots against opponents badly missing the bite of suspended George Boateng and Lee Cattermole, and the defensive guile of Gareth Southgate.
Gaizka Mendieta, an erratic performer, went closest to scoring for Boro when his long-range effort was tipped over by Pascale Zuberbuhler. That created false hope and Basle, who looked particularly menacing down their opponents' left flank, took command having been frustrated by Mark Schwarzer's saves.
That all changed in the 43rd minute, Boro's resistance broken when Argentine midfielder Matias Delgado beat Schwarzer from distance.
After picking up possession on his left-hand touchline when Mendieta was bypassed, he darted past the leaden Ray Parlour and, from 30 yards out, unleashed a shot that Riggott should have headed clear but then reared up awkwardly in front of Schwarzer, whose dive proved futile.
Worse followed two minutes later when Eduardo was allowed space to release the impressive Degen, who burst clear of Pogatetz before expertly planting the ball past Schwarzer. The goalkeeper was blamed by his defender for not mopping up the danger and Boro were in disarray as fighting broke out between rival supporters at half-time.
Hasselbaink did his best to bridge the deficit early in the second half when he rose to Franck Queudrue's cross, but Zuberbuhler pushed his header aside. Riggott then saw his header from Mendieta's corner strike the top of the crossbar.
Delgado, the Uefa Cup's leading scorer this term, almost recorded his eighth goal in the competition just after the hour but his free kick from an acute angle also hit the bar.
Riggott prevented Basle putting the tie beyond reasonable doubt in the 70th minute when he cleared Scott Chipperfield's shot off the line as Boro's defence started to disintegrate.
"Keeping a clean sheet in the second half became our priority at half-time and that clearance could be a defining moment of the tie," McClaren said. "Sometimes you've got to bounce back in the face of adversity and this is one of those occasions. We can score goals and play better than that. We know we have a mountain to climb but we're capable of doing that. I saw enough in this game to know that it will be completely different at the Riverside [next Thursday]."
Boro threatened only sporadically and their best effort in the latter stages came in the 88th minute, Ugo Ehiogu's header from Downing's corner saved by Zuberbuhler. Basle manager Christian Gross, derided in his time at Tottenham, savoured the victory.
"We know English teams never give up and so we're expecting a physically tough game at Middlesbrough next week," he said. "We've taken an important step to the semi-finals but understand it's not over. We know we have to score."

Pogatetz bloodied again as Basle brush Boro aside
Michael Walker at the Sankt Jakob Stadium
Friday March 31, 2006
The Guardian
Middlesbrough have put four past Manchester United and three past Chelsea at the Riverside this season. If they are to visit Bucharest in the semi-final of this competition then Steve McClaren's side will have to produce similar goalscoring when Basle visit Teesside for the second leg next Thursday. The 50th match of Boro's season turned out to be depressing both on and off the pitch and it will require inspiration and resilience absent here if the tie is to be retrieved.
With Boro seeming relatively comfortable, two goals from Matías Delgado and David Degen in the last three minutes of the first half were as surprising an intrusion as they were unwelcome. They have put Christian Gross's fluent team in control. Ominously, Basle have progressed past Monaco and Strasbourg in the previous two rounds by winning at home then drawing away.
Middlesbrough's night was marred further by ugly clashes at half-time in the corner occupied by their travelling supporters and then in the second half by a bad injury to Emanuel Pogatetz. Bloodied against Bolton on Sunday, he was in hospital in Basle with a broken nose and a suspected fractured skull, according to McClaren, after an accidental butt from Basle's Mladen Petric. The defender left the pitch on a stretcher. "I think he was conscious," McClaren said.
Of the game, the Boro manager said "a lack of concentration" was the reason for defeat. "I thought for the first 40 minutes we looked comfortable. We defended well but needed a bit more urgency going forward. Then we lost concentration and suddenly we're 2-0 down. That's European football.
"It's 2-0 at half-time and we didn't want that. It's a poor result. But it could have been worse and we know we can score at the Riverside. Chris Riggott's clearance off the line [in the second half] could be the defining moment of the tie; a third goal would have meant Everest to climb."
It was in the 71st minute when Riggott reacted sharply with Mark Schwarzer again beaten, this time by the Basle substitute Scott Chipperfield. It was Basle's best move and an example of what they can do. Twenty minutes earlier Riggott had rapped the home crossbar with a powerful header from a Gaizka Mendieta corner. That was the closest the visitors came to scoring and an eventful evening for Riggott also featured a serious dressing down from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
The volatile Dutchman may well have been furious with the defender for an apparent duck of his head when Delgado opened the scoring in the 43rd minute. The Argentinian cut in from the left touchline, glided away from Mendieta, passed Ray Parlour and then from 25 yards unleashed a shot which beat Schwarzer at his near post, the ball bouncing off the turf in a manner which would have been comical were it not so damaging. The groundsman should be credited with an assist.
The lead-up to the goal reaffirmed the value of George Boateng and Lee Cattermole to Boro's midfield. Both were suspended and the absence of captain Gareth Southgate was felt, too. They will return for the home leg but it is creativity Boro will need.
There were touches from Stewart Downing that offered encouragement. But three goals will have to be scored without the Teessiders conceding and, though they had let in only four goals in 10 Uefa Cup matches prior to last night, there was sufficient defensive indiscipline for Gross to say afterwards that he thought the Swiss side could get a vital away goal.
Boro enjoyed a bright opening in which Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka were prominent - the top scorer Aiyegbeni Yakubu was left on the bench again - but in Degen on the right the home side had a talented performer. A penalty-box dive for which he was deservedly booked spoiled his contribution but he will expect his goal to be more memorable. Seconds from the interval and less than three minutes after Delgado's strike, Eduardo found Degen in the channel behind Franck Queudrue and Pogatetz with a sweet reverse pass. The midfielder finished with a calm stroke of his right foot.
It was not the half-time McClaren wanted and Uefa will also be asking questions about it. With local police responding far too late, a knot of Middlesbrough fans engaged in some vicious fist-fighting with stewards. It was quelled, only for sporadic punching to break out among Boro's support. Uefa, moreover, will surely make inquiries about an offensive and provocative banner unfurled by Basle fans behind their goal before kick-off.

Two-goal burst sinks Middlesbrough

BASEL, Switzerland -- Two goals in three minutes at the end of the first half gave Swiss champions Basel a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough in their UEFA Cup quarterfinal first leg.
Argentine Matias Delgado put the hosts in front after 43 minutes when his right-foot shot from 35 meters out took a wicked bounce in front of Mark Schwarzer and went over the diving goalkeeper.
David Degen added a second goal in stoppage time, racing on to a through ball from Brazilian Eduardo to beat Schwarzer with another right-foot effort.
Substitute Scott Chipperfield almost made it 3-0 but his shot was cleared off the line by defender Chris Riggott.
Earlier, Riggott nearly brought the Premier League side back into the game but his header from Gaizka Mendieta's corner struck the crossbar.
Boro confident
Boro went into the tie confident they might be able to win only the second major trophy in the club's history after beating favorites Roma in the previous round.
However, the Swiss champions have not lost a league game at home for three years and they were always the better side on a pitch made slippery by constant rain throughout the match.
Degan should have done better after being presented with a great chance on the half hour but was given a yellow card for diving.
Basel keeper Pascal Zuberbuehler was then fortunate to see his attempt at stopping Gaizka Mendieta's shot from long range narrowly clear the bar.
Basel took the lead three minutes before the interval. There seemed little danger when Delgado picked up the ball on the left wing, but his long-range shot skipped off the surface right in front of Schwarzer, leaving him helpless.
The Swiss side then doubled their advantage with the last kick of the first half when Degen raced through to slide past Schwarzer after Eduardo had shown great vision to release him down the right.
To add to Middlesbrough's problems, manager Steve McClaren said Austrian defender Emanuel Pogatetz was taken to hospital with a broken nose and suspected fractured skull following a clash of heads with Mladen Petric in the second half.
The match was also marred by crowd trouble, with 13 people injured and one fan arrested after halftime clashes.
"I thought for the first 40 minutes we looked very comfortable with nothing to fear but those two goals before halftime epitomise European football," said McClaren.
"You lose your concentration for a few seconds and you're 2-0 down. That's what disappoints me most as we always say you have to keep your concentration all the way through."

Fussball: UEFA-Cup Basel - Middlesbrough -- Stimmen
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speziell loben will ich
Kenntnis. Wir können stolz auf uns sein.»
Steve McClaren (Trainer Middlesbrough): «Jetzt sagt

Basel gewinnt gegen Middlesbrough

Basle 2-0 Middlesbrough
PA
Middlesbrough's Uefa Cup dreams were left hanging by a thread after an explosive first-half finish proved decisive in this first leg for Swiss side Basle.

Doriva looks on as David Degan gets away
The Teessiders headed back from St Jakob Park for next week's quarter-final second leg trailing 2-0 and knowing they will have to score three goals more than Christian Gross' men at the Riverside Stadium if they are to make the last four.
Steve McClaren's side were a match for their hosts - who boast a Champions League victory over Celtic and draws against both Manchester United and Liverpool in the recent past - for much of the game.
However, they were undone inside three devastating minutes at the end of the first half as Argentinian midfielder Matias Delgado claimed his seventh goal in the competition and then David Degan added a second on the stroke of half-time.
Boro came close to pulling one back when Chris Riggott's 51st-minute header hit the bar. But Delgado also saw a free-kick clip the woodwork, and Riggott hacked another effort off the line from substitute Scott Chipperfield.
u2022 Riggott disappointed but not dejected
The Teessiders had conceded only four goals in their previous 10 European games this season, but the Swiss Axpo Super League leaders demonstrated their pedigree with a performance which suggests Boro will have to turn in a stunning display on their own pitch if they are to claw back the deficit.
Fighting in the crowd at half-time marred the evening for the 1,400 or so travelling supporters, but the biggest trouble for Boro came on the pitch.
Boro's game plan was much as it had been against both Stuttgart and Roma in the previous rounds - the pursuit of a potentially invaluable away goal and a clean sheet.
For 43 minutes, they were at least halfway there as the Swiss side struggled to break them down despite left-back Franck Queudrue having his hands full with midfielder Degen.
There was even optimism that the second half might yield that precious strike at the other end as the Teessiders threatened, although not with any great regularity, through England winger Stewart Downing and front two Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka.
Yet just as it looked as though they had safely negotiated the opening 45 minutes, disaster struck.
Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer had earlier had to keep out a well-struck drive from defender Boris Smiljanic, but he was to be defeated by both danger man Delgado and the pitch.
There seemed to be little to concern the Australian when the South American received the ball from Bruno Berner on the left touchline.
However, he cut inside Ray Parlour and unleashed a dipping right-foot shot which reared up off the rain-sodden turf and flew over the helpless goalkeeper.
Schwarzer was still dusting himself down when striker Eduardo played the ball in behind central defender Emanuel Pogatetz for Degan to slide a second beyond the hopelessly exposed goalkeeper.
The visitors could barely believe what had happened as they trudged off the pitch at the break, during which riot police were drafted in as fighting broke out in the crowd.
With Gaizka Mendieta having tested goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuhler with a long-range effort 12 minutes before half-time, Boro knew they could hurt their hosts - but they needed to do it quickly.
They went close within four minutes of the restart when Hasselbaink directed a header towards Zuberbuhler's bottom left corner, and the goalkeeper was at full stretch to turn the ball away.
But he was beaten from the resulting corner when central defender Riggott powered in a header from Mendieta's cross, only for his effort to clip the crossbar and fly to safety.
Basle, with the impressive Papa Malick Ba sitting in front of the back four, frustrated Boro by retaining possession for long periods - and with Delgado and Degen probing in midfield, the signs were ominous.
It took a brave block from Stuart Parnaby to keep out the Argentinian's goal-bound 63rd-minute effort, and Schwarzer needed the help of the crossbar seconds later when the same man curled in a free-kick.
The visitors were forced into a reshuffle on 68 minutes when Pogatetz, who had five stitches put into a facial wound on Sunday, left the pitch on a stretcher with a broken nose after a clash with Mladen Petric and was replaced by Ugo Ehiogu.
Their woes might have deepened within three minutes when Chipperfield ran on to Petric's lay-off to side-foot towards goal, only for Riggott to hack clear.
Basle looked more likely to add to their tally than Boro did to grab a lifeline as the clock ran down. Ehiogu might have done just that with a minute remaining but saw his header from a Downing corner saved on the line.
It was a dejected visiting side which left the pitch on the final whistle - knowing that, while they are still in the tie with George Boateng and Lee Cattermole available after suspension, they have a mountain to climb.
u2022 'We don't feel out of it'
Chris Riggott insisted Middlesbrough have not given up hope of continuing their UEFA Cup adventure.
And the defender said: 'We needed to get that away goal - but we don't feel we are out of it yet, I can asusre you of that.
'You saw in spells we are capable of keeping the ball against them and creating a few chances - I should have scored from a header myself.'
Riggott, captain in the absence of the injured Gareth Southgate, added on Five: 'It was a tough night - we played reasonably well in the first half but gave away two poor goals and it costs you at this level.'
Basle boss Christian Gross was cautiously pleased with the outcome. 'It was a good result but not the perfect result - not conceding was one of our targets today,' he said on Five.
Asked about Delgado's goal, which he struck from long range, Gross added: 'I told the players before kick-off it was a fast pitch and to try to shoot. It was an excellent shot from Delgado, and difficult for a goalkeeper.'

Pogatetz - Saison zu Ende
31.03.2006 | 14:10:22
